U.S. Army acquires Rize Just one 3D printer for spare elements on-demand

certification

The Armament Exploration, Development and Engineering Centre (ARDEC) of the U.S. Army in New Jersey has obtained a Rize One 3D printer for the on-desire production of spare parts and resources.

Rize One was commercially released by RIZE, a Massachusetts-based 3D printer producer, in 2017. It employs the company’s proprietary APD technological innovation which combines extrusion and ink jetting concurrently to create 3D parts.

James Zunino, Elements Engineer at ARDEC, claimed, “A method can go down because of one particular lacking portion and a thing like 3D printing certification can get you again in the struggle. Which is a large benefit to the Military.”

“If a take care of is broken on purge pump or wheel is weakened on an EOD robot, you can print a new just one.”

ARDEC producing laboratories

ARDEC is the key munitions and armament study hub of the U.S. armed forces. Its numerous branches incorporate CNC, laser machining, and additive producing certification functions. Portion of ARDEC’s Benet laboratories is the Additive Production certification Facility which operates the Optomec‘s 850 R LENS Technique and the Immediate Prototyping Facility, housing Viper Si2, SLA 3500 by 3D Devices, Dimension Elite and Objet500 Connex3 PolyJet by Stratasys.

In addition to manufacturing equipment, ARDEC’s Superior Composites Lab is liable for production and analyzing elements these types of as polymers, metals, ceramics, and carbon composites.

The Rize A single printer was obtained by the Superior Resources Know-how Department (AMTB) of ARDEC. This facility presently has 20-five 3D printers ranging between $500 and $500k.

Rize One particular Augmented Polymer Deposition

Rize A person has impressed troopers with its minimum write-up-processing prerequisites. The assistance framework 3D printed by Rize One particular is uncomplicated to get rid of and a component does not have to have to be soaked in a solvent for hours. In advance of buying Rize Just one the ARDEC units have been working with FDM/FFF printers, whose 3D printed areas required to be submerged in a solvent for 4-6 hours to eliminate the dissolvable supports.

On the simple post-processing capabilities of the Rize Just one, AMTB Scientist Matthew Brauer stated, “It’s uncomplicated to peel away supports from intricate geometries, and that offers a faster element in the soldier’s hand.”

At the ARDEC foundation, some of the simple software of the Rize A person 3D printer include production of spare components these types of as window knobs of Humvees, openers for chemical drums, and generator wrench.

Accelerating additive

In current years, the U.S. Military and U.S Air Drive (USAF) have built initiatives to accelerate the adoption of 3D printing certification technology into their broader manufacturing operations. USAF’s MAMLS venture is a superior instance in this regards.

The Rize A person furthers the objective of U.S Military. With Rize One’s ink-jetting system, serial range and QR codes can be printed onto the spare parts. A QR code can deliver a digital thread again to the first style and design with in depth data on the section.

Zunino commented, “I imagine acquiring accountability and provenance of a section is huge in the typical acceptance of AM sections […] A ton of it is rely on in the new engineering and this definitely can help build some of that belief.”
