Lam Study and VELO3D be part of forces to progress 3D printing for semiconductors

Californian 3D printer company VELO3D has announced a joint advancement agreement with semiconductor expert Lam Research to progress 3D metallic printing for semiconductor applications. Lam’s investment arm, Lam Capital, will also be investing an undisclosed total in VELO’s 3D printing certification engineering, eventually aiming to scale up its own additive production certification component quantity in the up coming five yrs.

Kevin Jennings, senior vice president of World Functions at Lam Research, states: “This joint growth arrangement aligns perfectly with Lam’s mission to repeatedly request new technologies that press the boundaries of product design and style and manufacturing. We are thrilled to guide the semiconductor industry in offering price to our customers from AM.”

Joint enhancement settlement

The collaborative effort and hard work will see the advancement of new novel metal alloys and processes for use with VELO’s Sapphire 3D printer. Lam intends to use the process to generate proprietary wafer fabrication tooling – the equipment used to manufacture nano-scale semiconductor elements and built-in circuits. With its investment, Lam believes the Sapphire procedure is far more than capable of manufacturing the fantastic characteristics and complex 3D structures located in 21st century digital devices.

Jennings provides, “Lam Analysis is leveraging additive manufacturing certification as a driver of the innovation that permits our customers to construct scaled-down, a lot quicker, much more powerful, and power-effective digital units for each day use.”

Additive manufacturing certification and semiconductors

Semiconductor manufacturing is the epitome of significant-volume output, whereby billions of silicon ‘on/off switches’ are packed into the microprocessing chips discovered in all of our digital equipment. It necessitates the maximum stages of repeatability, regularity, and precision management down to close to-atomic scales. As such, the specific tooling will need an equally precise producing method.

VELO’s Sapphire technique is a laser-dependent powder bed fusion 3D printer, whereby a superior electricity laser scans above a chamber of powder, fusing the person granules into reliable layers. The method, by mother nature, optimizes raw content use and is capable of developing sophisticated geometries which would usually be unachievable.

Benny Buller, CEO and founder of VELO3D, concludes: “VELO3D is nicely positioned to provide self-assurance in metallic 3D printing certification thanks to our calibration, metrology, and digital traceability abilities. This marriage aims to speed up Lam’s journey of ongoing innovation toward developing tools that creates reducing-edge microprocessors, memory devices, and numerous associated product or service sorts.”

The Lam financial commitment is just one of many received by VELO this 12 months, as the firm announced in June that it had raised $12M in cash with the addition of new strategic traders. The Sequence D funding round took the manufacturer’s complete funding to an impressive $150M. Also in June, VELO made the announcement that it had gained its most significant Sapphire 3D printer purchase in its two 12 months background. The purchase came from an current unnamed aerospace buyer and totaled $20M.
