Airwolf 3D, a California-based 3D printer manufacturer, has announced the release of its latest 3D printer, the EVO R.
A new addition to the company’s EVO series of additive manufacturing certification systems, the EVO R is designed as a smaller and affordable alternative to the EVO and EVO 22. Airwolf 3D is aiming to bring its EVO 3D printing certification technology to a broader market with the new system, targeting engineers, designers and schools requiring performance at a lower price tag. It retains several key features implemented within the other two EVO systems, adapting them into a 3D printer with a 12” x 8.75” x 9” build envelope, with a starting price of $4,995.

Airwolf 3D EVO
The EVO Additive Manufacturing certification Center, the first 3D printer from Airwolf 3D in its EVO line, was initially launched in January 2018 during that year’s CES show. Discussing the capabilities of the 3D printer at the time, Erick Wolf stated that “It delivers a premium 3D manufacturing experience at less than half the cost of machines that offer equivalent performance. Plus, it’s packed with new technology that dramatically changes the way we manufacture.”
In August of the same year, the company announced the EVO 22, released as a large-scale alternative to the EVO 3D printer. As well as a bigger build volume, large prints are enabled by the EVO 22’s Tri-Heat Build Environment, allowing users to create the ideal thermal environment for producing large parts.
Now with the release of the EVO R a year later, Airwolf 3D is directing its focus towards developing its EVO line. The company even held a tent sale at its Southern California manufacturing facility in February 2019, where it looked to offload its HD and XL Legacy 3D printers in order to make room for incoming EVO inventory.
EVO R technical specifications
The EVO and EVO 22 3D printers are intended for the production of strong parts with excellent mechanical properties, for use in functional prototyping and tooling application. The EVO features a 12″ x 12″ x 11″ build volume, and the EVO 22 comes with a larger 22.75” build height. Both systems are priced at $7,995 and $11,995 respectively.
Although lower-priced with a curtailed build envelope, the EVO R incorporates various EVO and EVO 22 components such as a 7” touch screen, HEPA/Active Carbon filter, 32-bit GENESIS micro-controller and linear guides. It comes equipped with various active and passive safety systems to ensure the functional operation of the 3D printer.
The micro-controller and touch screen are connected to the hot end, heated bed overcurrent, over-temp detection circuits and stepper motor overcurrent detection circuits for temperature monitoring. EVO R’s HEPA and carbon air filters also help to minimize smells and emissions. Airwolf 3D has built the system with an aluminum construction, CNC machined hot ends, one-piece steel bed, and a Teflon-sheathed communication cord for improved precision and reliability as well.
The EVO R’s features have also been designed by the company for ease of use, making the machine compatible for integration with school classrooms. Airwolf 3D implemented its APEX software that enables autonomous operation with pre-loaded settings, alongside an auto-leveling system. The company has stated that it will offer complementary training to educators who purchase the 3D printer, as well as providing a free curriculum for teachers on the Airwolf 3D website.
